Advocating For LGBTQ Progress
At Artz, Dewhirst & Wheeler, LLP, we are active in the LGBTQ community and professionally advocate for LGBTQ interests in our practice of the law. We give the same attention to the nuances of LGBTQ family law as we do our other areas of focus.
We creatively represent our clients in complex custody matters. Our firm’s legal advocacy resulted in a groundbreaking ruling that recognized the right of a domestic partner to continue a parental relationship with a child that has legal status with a former partner.
A prenup reflects the wishes of the marrying couple regarding the ownership and separation of assets and debts. This clear pronouncement of ownership of resources in marriage and how it will separate in the event of a divorce can be especially beneficial for LGBTQ couples who have shared assets before marriage not covered under Ohio’s community property law.
For couples that decide not to marry, a domestic partnership agreement can create a partnership with legal status. This type of arrangement can officially define ownership of property and assets and divide debts and obligations. It can also make the practicalities of ending a relationship much more straightforward when ownership and responsibilities are already legally outlined.
Fighting Against Discrimination
Over the years, LGBTQ people have been subjected to discrimination in all areas of society. Though there are substantial gains in civil rights equity, it is necessary to remain vigilant about rights violations. Though Columbus has an anti-discrimination ordinance that addresses gender identity and sexual orientation in regards to employment, we continue anti-discrimination efforts for our clients in the areas of:
- Employment rights
- Housing equity
- Criminal law
- Hate crimes
